Body Buck

Jaguar XJ13

In the 1960s, Jaguar developed the XJ13 prototype racing car with the ambition to compete at Le Mans. It is a remarkably sleek roadster designed by the famous Jaguar aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer. One can easily see similarity to the famous E-Type, with a key difference between the two being the XJ13’s mid-engine V12 layout.

Body Buck

Of legend, in 1967 the car lapped the MIRA test track in the hands of racing driver David Hobbs at over 160 mph, establishing a record that has persisted for many decades.

Unique or limited production alloy body automobiles utilize a fixture commonly known as a body buck. The three dimensional template permits the formed panels to be checked for accuracy and fixtured for welding. They consist of an egg-crate array of plywood templates that create the outline of the body at numerous stations along its length. Panel forming craftsmen use the buck to check the shape of each piece of sheet metal during the shaping process, alternately forming and checking over and over until it fits the buck precisely.

“The car is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cars ever produced”
